DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF INFLUENZA

Abstract
The importance of early diagnosis of influenza lies on view point of preventive medicine in status of present days of no satisfactory treatment available, in spite of cyclic world-wide pandemic spread and recurrence in previous morbid persons.
Definite diagnosis is dependent on isolation of virus from throat washing and sputum, and strain identification with neutralizing antibody serologically. One of easy and rapid specific diagnostic -method available is fluorescent antibody staining of desquamated nasal epithelial cells. Hemagglutination inhibition and complement fixation tests are also available, but its values in early diagnosis and clinical availability in patient care are negligible. Their importance is rather in epidemiologic study.
Treatment of influenza is largely on symptomatic and supportive management, and prevention of .complications. Recent interesting progresses in treatment of influenza are on Amantadine and its
derivatives, Isoquinoline drug U.K. 2371, interferon and its inducer, though its value and availability are not confirmed.
Prevention with vaccination is now the most widely available and predictable means despite some problems on its effectiveness.
